Professor, University of Tokyo. Born in Tokyo in 1964 and raised in Nishinomiya. Graduated from the Graduate School of Engineering, University of Tokyo in 1989, Ph.D. in 1993, and meteorologist in 1994. Assistant at the University of Tokyo in 1989, lecturer, etc. in 1995, and professor at the Institute of Industrial Science since 2006. Senior Vice-Rector of the United Nations University and Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations from 2016 to 2021. Special Advisor to the Rector since 2017 and current position since 2020. Books include 'The Future of Water' (Iwanami Shoten, 2016), 'Water Crisis: The True Story' (Shinchosha Selection, 2012), and 'World Map of Water 2nd Edition' (Supervised, Maruzen Publishing, 2011).
